Albany & Schenectady County
The Mohawk-Hudson Bikeway begins along the banks of the Hudson River in downtown Albany and proceeds north to the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers then west through Cohoes and along the shores of the Mohawk River. There are scenic views and other attractions along the way. The entire trail is 41 miles long, but it can be toured in much smaller segments. For those who enjoy a challenge, park your vehicle at Historic Lock 7 Park in Niskayuna and proceed west on the Mohawk-Hudson Bikeway along the old Penn Central railroad bed. The path will challenge your endurance with a steep grade, exciting turns and some lovely views of the Mohawk River. Wildlife is abundant through sections that pass through abundant wetlands. Enjoy the beauty of the Mohawk River, the quiet streets the historic Stockade District, and Scotia’s beautiful Collins Park. Begin this easy, family friendly 10 mile journey from the parking lot on Route 5S in Rotterdam Junction. At Schenectady County Community College you will cross the Mohawk River on Rt 5. Turn right onto Schonowe Avenue. Don’t forget to notice the replica of the Canal Bridge before you again make a right onto Freeman’s Bridge Road. Cross the Mohawk River again. Bike Route signs will lead you through the quaint Stockade District before heading back.
Fulton County
Take yourself back in time to the booming days of an upstate New York railroad, a new trail that runs from Johnstown to Mayfield, via Gloversville, along parts of the Cayadutta Creek. Built on the old Fonda Johnstown & Gloversville Railroad roadbed this trail will take you through yesterday’s booming leather tanning industry, today’s modern industrial parks, and through the countryside filled with scenery, wildlife, and agriculture. Rensselaer County
The most appropriate way to visit the Grafton Peace Pagoda is by bicycling to the site. Take scenic Rte 2 east and apx 8/10ths of a mile after the bucolic hamlet of Grafton, take a right onto Taconic Lake Rd and follow signs which will direct you to the Pagoda, with your mantra intact.
Saratoga County
For a mix of village, country, park and city experiences, begin at Route 9 in the Village of Round Lake, traverse west to the Zim Smith Trail in the Town of Malta, then return to Route 9 and go north to the Saratoga Spa State Park and the City of Saratoga Springs. From there, continue north on County Bike Route 9 to South Glens Falls’ bike trails. If you like being near water, take a quick 9-mile trip on mostly flat terrain around Lake Lonely. Or, for a longer yet still relatively flat trek, try the 18-mile loop around Saratoga Lake. In both cases, go east out of Saratoga Springs on Union Avenue to Rt. 9P. For Lake Lonely, turn right on Crescent Avenue. For Saratoga Lake, just stay on Rt. 9P. Experience history as you bike through the 27 miles of the Saratoga National Historical Park, site of the Turning Point of the American Revolution. Stop at the Visitors Center and pick up a map to get a description of what happened along the fields you pass as you travel the paved roads through the park. For the mountain biker, Moreau Lake State Park has intermediate and expert trails that offer fantastic views of the Spier Falls. To get to the park, take I-87 to Exit 17 and turn west. The Park sells detailed trail maps for $1.00.

Washington & Saratoga County
From Waterford to Whitehall you will be introduced to the sites and communities along America’s first operating waterway, the Upper Hudson River and the Champlain Canal. Start the 64-mile journey on the Lakes to Locks Passage at Peebles Island State Park in Waterford and go north along Route 4. Take a side trip through the Saratoga National Historical Park. Ride along the 9 mile tour road to see the site of the turning point of the American Revolutionary War. Continue on Route 4 along State Bike Route #9 to Fort Edward. Take a side trip off of Route 4 at Baldwin Corners and get on the Canal Trail, (which goes along the Champlain Canal adjacent to Route 4), stop in Whitehall and experience boats locking through from the Champlain Canal to Lake Champlain.
