Character, history, and charm are just a few of the reasons Saratoga County and Saratoga Springs were named as one of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. However, this sort of acclaim is nothing new to Saratoga.
For centuries, Saratoga Springs has been a premier summer destination. Some have come to be a part of the excitement of world renowned Thoroughbred horse racing, others to "see and be seen."
Still others visit Saratoga Springs to partake of the legendary healing waters, to revel in the county's rich and varied natural beauty, to capture a bit of the past at the area's historical sites and Victorian mansions or, to simply relax and enjoy. Saratoga encourages you to visit and experience the legend for yourself.
Saratoga is perhaps best known for its Thoroughbred racing. The Thoroughbred season opens in late July and runs through Labor Day. The world’s best horses highlight the thrill and excitement at Saratoga Race Course, leading up to the famous Travers Stakes that takes place in late August. From jazz to opera; ballet to rock, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center is one of upstate New York’s popular cultural sites.
Located in the beautiful Saratoga Spa State Park, the Performing Arts Center shares its home with the newly opened Saratoga Automobile Museum, The National Museum of Dance, the championship Saratoga Spa Golf Course and the Roosevelt Mineral Baths & Spa. These attractions are complimented by two pools, a historic hotel, hiking and biking trails, flowing mineral water springs and a theater company.
The Battle of Saratoga, known as the Turning Point of the American Revolution, can be relived by visiting Saratoga National Historical Park, the Saratoga Battle Monument and various other historical sites throughout Saratoga County.
Saratoga is also home to Saratoga Gaming and Raceway. With over 1,300 video lottery gaming options, live harness racing from February through December and many other entertainment options, Saratoga Gaming and Raceway is an exciting venue to visit while in Saratoga.
While taking in all that Saratoga has to offer, visitors can experience over 10 different museums – including three National Museums, golf at one of 14 spectacular public golf courses, stroll our tree-lined streets where you can shop or dine in a captivating downtown, take a rejuvenating mineral bath or enjoy outdoor recreational opportunities like walking through a historic neighborhood, fishing or boating on Saratoga Lake or driving along the Lakes to Locks Passage.
